Encuentro sobre Open Hardware en París
El encuentro tubo lugar el 14 de diciembre en las instalaciones que openpattern.org tiene cerca de Paris y Vic Hayes fué el moderador. La actividad empezó el miércoles por la tarde y duró hasta el sábado. En la reunión participaron unas veinte personas de procedencias muy diferentes: cooperadores internacionales, empresas frabricantes de hardware, programadores e ingenieros de hardware y miembors de las redes libres, uno de los cuales era Roger de guifi.net que es quién nos ha preparado este resumen.
El encuentro sirvió para constatar que el Open Hardware todavia está en una fase embrionaria y que se estan haciendo grandes pasos para evolucionarlo y consolidarlo, también sirvió como punto de encuentro para el encarrilar el trabajo de este objetivo. Se trataron los puntos siguientes:
* Entidad para el Open-HW
Se optó por continuar trabajando de forma oficiosa, dejando la discusión de la formalización de una figura (grupo, fundación, ...) para más adelante, a la espera de los resultados que el trabajo oficioso pueda aportar y para dejar tiempo para la difusión con la intención de conseguir la máxima implicación de personas interesadas en el tema.
* Open-HW vs. Open Software
La comparación con el modelo 'open software' es inevitable pero se debe tener en cuenta que son cosas diferentes. Sin embargo, como modelo de inspiración y referencia es perfectamente válido, En este sentido ya se han iniciado contactos con la Free Software Foundation (FSF) para explorar la posibilidad de colaboración.
* Legalidad
La necesidad de tener garantías de que el Open-HW siempre se mantendrá Open-HW es evidente. Una estrategia posible es utilizar las normativas vigentes para proteger la propiedad intelectual e industrial para generar un sistema de licencias que protegan el Open-HW como se hace en el código y la documentación. Como primer objetivo se ha fijado el diseño y fabricación de un dispositivo enrutador wireless cuanto antes (se quiere tener un prototipo antes de seis meses). Se quiere que este proceso este impulsado por un grupo formado por voluntarios entre los cuales habra representación de los colectivos implicados en la concepción, diseño, producción y uso del Open-HW.
El próximo encuentro está previsto que se realice entre los meses de marzo y abril en Taiwan (país que concentra una parte importante de la producción del material electrónico mundial). Se acordó buscar financiación para el viage de quién tenga necesidad.
Valoración según Roger (guifi.net):
Fué un lujo poder sentarse en la misma mesa donde había gente tan diversa como 'el padre del wireless', personajes relevantes del mundo de la industria del hardware, de las comunidades hackers y de las comunidades wireless. La presencia de esta gente en la mesa permite ver que, aquello que a priori puede parecer una quimera, se vea como una posibilidad real. El Open-HW ya está en movimiento y esto nos debe hacer reflexionar sobre que papel debemos jugar desde nuestra posición.
Conclusión:
El Open-HW es una pieza de la maquinaria de la libertad, que tiene un primo mayor, el software libre, que le puede servir de referente y que le a allanado bastante el camino, camino que por otro lado debe hacer por sí mismo. Y que tiene un buen amigo en las redes libres que, al mismo tiempo, van haciendo su propio camino, un amigo con quién hablar, compartir experiencias, ... y que justifica su propia razón de ser.
